Methane, Taxpayer Dollars, and Clean Air



The Campaign

Every year, hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars go up in smoke when oil and gas operators vent and flare natural gas. This wasteful practice is also a major source of air pollution. At the start of 2017, STG was brought on to manage the communications arm of a coalition working to defend a rule that prevents this waste on federal lands.

STG created and implemented a strategic media campaign to lift up the voices of taxpayers, ranchers/land owners, sportsmen, tribes, and veterans in the news and put pressure on key members of the Senate.


Our campaign successfully handed President Trump the first legislative defeat of his administration.

We implemented a multi-channel communications strategy that focused on personal stories and the critical role the rule plays in the daily lives of local and diverse stakeholders. Our strategic paid media placements, aggressive earned media strategy and digital communications support paved the way for our narrative to break through the crowded media landscape and dominate the coverage around the methane CRA in local, beltway, and national news outlets. 




Political impact

Handing Trump his first legislative defeat sent shockwaves throughout D.C. This moment was not only a victory for the environment community, it was an inspirational moment for the resistance movement on the whole. A win of this magnitude helped lay the groundwork for Trump’s future defeats on healthcare.
